Chapter 16
Grayson
Leanne might have been in a bad mood but by the end of the night, she is smiling and laughing harder than anyone. I was worried when Reagan told me about her bad day, my instincts of wanting to protect her surprised even me. I couldnât go on knowing my daughter was upset, and possibly because of someone else. It made a fierceness I didnât recognize come out in me.
Reagan wasnât joking when she said Leanne was a good dancer. Sure, I had seen her dance at the house and thought she was the best, but now that I have other kids her age to compare her to, there is no competition. She is doing moves that Delilah shows them after just one or two tries, while the other kids are barely paying attention to what is going on. Leanne is there perfecting the moves in the mirror, making sure she gets every step. I am more than impressed. I have to eventually peel myself away from the window to give another parent a peek in but I just want to keep watching.
After class Leanne runs into Reaganâs arms and talks a mile a minute about how good she did and what Delilah said about her. Reagan somehow keeps up while I am impressed by how quickly a kid can talk. She runs to change back into her clothes and Reagan tells her weâre going out for ice cream. Youâd think Leanne won the lottery because this kid jumps in the air and she does this little happy dance that makes you want to join in.
âCan we go to Scoops?â Leanne asks as we walk outside. I look up at Reagan whoâs looking back at me. Reagan and I had spent many afternoons when we were teenagers getting ice cream from Scoops and getting high at the nearby park. The amount of times we stumbled in there high off our asses is more than the amount of weed we smoked.
âItâs her favorite ice cream in town,â Reagan blurts out, and I laugh.
âWhat?â Leanne looks between us, confused.
âNothing, we can definitely go there.â I smile and she jumps up.
âCan I ride with you guys?â I am anxious to spend any extra time with Leanne.
âSure.â Reagan looks unsure but leads us to her car.
Leanne buckles herself in the back seat and Reagan starts the car. Instinctively, I go to put my hand on her thigh, but halfway, I stop myself. Putting my hand on my own lap. What am I doing? I canât remember the last time I had put my hand on her thigh but sitting with Reagan, it just feels natural. Will these little things ever go away, or will I always be fighting my natural urges when it comes to Reagan?
âDo you have a job?â Leanne asks.
âLeanne! You canât just ask people that!â
âItâs okay.â I chuckle. âI donât have a job right now, but I used to.â
âWhat do you do?â
âI was a mechanic, but I saved a lot and now Iâm thinking about going back to school.
